The Housing Choice Voucher Program (known as Section 8) helps families, the elderly, and people with disabilities who have very low-incomes pay for privately-owned rental housing. Renters pay about 30 percent of their income for their housing. Local public housing authorities (PHA) pay the balance of the market rental value directly to the owners.
People apply to their PHA for the Housing Choice Voucher Program, but they must find their own housing. Housing can include single-family homes, townhouses, and condos.
The Iowa Compass tip sheet, Finding Accessible Housing, has tips on finding landlords who have accessible housing for people with disabilities and accept Housing Choice vouchers.
